How to Get 80's Style Curls

The ultimate throwback.

It's official, curly hair is trending-more specifically, a throwback to the mega-volume curls of the 1980s! These rebellious spirals are perfectly imperfect, with a little frizz and a lot of bounce. And, while they may look intricate-and impossible to replicate if you weren't born with them-they're actually surprisingly easy to achieve. Interested in learning how to put a modern twist on an unforgettable hairstyle? We're sharing how to get 80's style curls below!

The Tools You'll Need:

Volumizing mousse

• Blow-dryer with diffuser attachment

• 1 to 3 curling wands-barrel sizes ranging from 1/4-inch to 1-inch

Next Day Hair texturizing spray

How to Get the Look:

Assess Your Hair Type

If you have naturally curly or wavy hair you'll want to embrace that gorgeous, born-with-it texture by drying your hair on your blow-dryer's lowest setting using a diffuser attachment. If you have straight hair, you'll want to rough dry your hair using your fingers to get a little extra volume to play with. Remember to first distribute a golf ball-sized amount of volumizing mousse through your damp strands before you dry. This will help you get that mega-watt volume 80's style curls are known for.

Give It Shape

Next you'll want to get those spirals going. Remember that 80s style curls are beautiful because they aren't overly polished. You want the look to be naturally imperfect, a little bit frizzy, and rebellious. This is why you'll want to reach for a few different sized curling wands, ranging from ¼-inch to 1-inch barrels. By using different sized curling wands you can better fake-or accentuate-natural curl patterns and achieve a more modern finish.

If your hair is naturally wavy or curly, take your natural curls that are face-framing and wrap them tightly around the barrel of your curling wands. You'll want to alternate between different wands with each curl, but always follow the natural flow of the spiral. Once those layers are done, use your fingers to gently break up each coil. This helps to give your hair major volume!

If you have straight hair, you'll want to do the curling steps above but on your entire head. Start at the nape of your neck and wrap 1/2- to 1-inch sections of hair around the barrels of the wands-again alternating between different sizes each time. Once your entire head is curled-and cooled-break up the curls for a more natural-looking finish.

Mess It Up

The key to modern 80s style curls is that they aren't perfect-looking. So when you're styling, keep the mantra "the messier the better" in mind! For added texture, spray Next Day Hair all over your curls. This will give them even more grit and volume. Finally, use your hand to haphazardly flip your curls over to one side, giving yourself a deep, natural-looking side part.

Expert Tip: When creating your curls with wands, they can often fall back into that very polished, uniform curl that the wand originally gave you. Don't be afraid to break up these tight coils throughout the day to enhance the look of natural movement and give you even more volume!
