We've heard it time and time again: 100 brush strokes per day is key for a long, healthy mane. It may seem like sound advice, but is it really? The truth: not so much. What if we told you the less you brush your hair, the better? That surely goes against this "golden rule," but trust us when we tell you it's actually a lot better for your hair.
Brushing your hair regularly can help move the natural oils from your scalp down your hair's shaft and distribute moisture, but it's easy to overdo it (ahem, 100 times a night) and cause breakage and split ends. Instead, stick to a brushing schedule of once or twice per day to remove tangles.
How to Brush...the Right Way
Beyond just the brush you use (more on that below), your brushing technique matters. Many people brush from scalp to ends, but-in truth-the best way to brush your hair is to start from the ends and work upwards towards the scalp.
Top tip: It's always a bad idea to brush through your hair vigorously, as this can scratch the scalp, tear out hair, and/or cause breakage. Be gentle! If your hair is particularly knotty, don't hack at the tangles with your brush. Choosing Your Brush
L'Oreal Professionnel Artist Travis Parker recommends using a boar and nylon mix-bristle brush when your hair is dry, and use a cushion-based thin and flexible nylon bristle brush when your hair is wet.
Editor's note: Many pros warn against brushing your hair when it's wet as this can cause damage and breakage. Where possible, allow your hair to air dry before brushing...except if your hair is curly. If you have curly hair, ONLY brush your hair when it's wet (just not sopping wet) since dry brushing can damage curls and cause frizz. Apply a leave-in cream to add subtle slip that helps to prevent breakage.
