If you're primping for a big event, L'Oréal Professionnel celebrity stylist Jennifer MacDougall suggests visiting the salon to let the professionals tackle this tricky hairstyle. "It's just not easy to recreate at home," she says of the coveted round waves. "Very small sections of hair need to be curled and then brushed out in a specific way that is difficult to do-especially when it comes to the back of the head."
When clients want softly tumbled Hollywood waves, MacDougall combs in enough full-volume mousse to lightly saturate your hair before blow drying it. Then she uses a 1-inch curling iron to wrap tight curls away from the face, pinning them in place to cool while she finishes the rest of the head. When all the curls are set and cooled, she sprays them with a strong-hold hairspray before releasing the pins. Then she loosens up the waves with a wide-tooth comb and sets them in place how she sees fit with a flexible hold hairspray.
"Make sure your side part is on point," MacDougall says. And if you want your waves to last more than one night, sleep with them tucked into a hairnet or invest in a satin pillowcase, she says.
