The Return of the Perm: How to Embrace Your Voluminous Curls

The ultimate comeback style.

If the word perm evokes images of huge, teased '80s rock band hair, it's time to to hit the reset button. Modern-era perms offer softer textures, flowing waves, and bouncy, beautiful curls. If you're looking to add a little texture to your sleek, straight hair-or you're simply hoping to finally embrace your naturally voluminous curls once and for all-keep reading.

Perms 101

The last decade was marked by ultra-sleek, super-straight locks. Curls were blow-dried, flat-ironed, and relaxed, into sleek submission. Keratin and Japanese straightening treatments reigned supreme and when texture was talked about, it almost always meant adding in subtle waves to already straight hair. However, in recent months we've seen a return to texture-and with it, the perm.

"When I first started doing hair it was all about the flat iron, but now, what a time to capitalize on what you naturally have," says expert stylist and L'Oréal Professionnel Ambassador Yureesh Hooker. But, even if you don't naturally have waves and curls, there is a way to get them without having to heat-style every day.

Modern perms feature soft, flowing, effortless texture-much like you see in your hair after a day at the beach. Perms now appear to be air-dried texture that you could have been born with. Your stylist can even customize the size of your curl-from smaller, tighter coils to large, loose waves-and where the bends begin, so your perm is perfectly personalized.

Embrace Your Natural Curl

Already have big, voluminous curls? Pack that flat iron away and embrace your natural texture this season. Start by getting a fresh cut. With curls, the cut is key if you want your hair to fall beautifully without having to go back in with a hot tool. Next, concentrate on moisture. Hooker says that with curls you need to focus on hydration. The use of a leave-in conditioner is essential. These all-day moisturizers help to add shine and softness to curls, in turn making them more manageable.
