The Battle of the Bobs: Curly vs. Straight

Which texture is best?

A blunt bob is easily one of the most classic cuts around. While the style originally rose to fame in the 1920s, it has truly lasted the test of time. This style staying power is thanks in large part to the versatility of the cut. Worn straight, curly, wavy, or with a bang, the bob complements nearly every face shape and hair texture-which makes deciding how to wear it each day a real struggle. If you're going back and forth between bouncy and curly or sleek and straight, let our stylists help you decide!

The Curly Bob

The Style: Worn curly, the timeless bob evokes a style reminiscent of the flappers of the 1920s. The curly bob is low maintenance and has multi-season appeal-morphing into an edgy, shoulder-length style as it grows out.

Stylists say...

"It's a great wash-and-wear haircut, and it works on every face shape other than round," says New York City stylist and L'Oréal Professionnel artist Amit Abraham.

Dos & Dont's

Do use a bit of volumizing mousse on wet hair for added bounce.

Don't ever use hairspray on a curly bob. "It will totally lose its bounce and movement and make the style look way too dated," Abraham says.

The Straight Bob

The Style: The smooth, defined shape of a classic bob flatters both the jaw and the neckline, making it an ultra flirty, fun, feminine look.

Stylists say...

"This look is simplistic," says L'Oréal Professionnel celebrity stylist Jennifer MacDougall. "It's for someone who wants to enter a room with a clean, fashionable haircut, but also for someone who's willing to visit the salon often to keep it looking that way."

Dos & Don'ts

Do plan on getting a trim every four to six weeks.

Don't over utilize hot tools. A simple blowout and a bit of styling cream is all you need.
