Texture Throwdown: Tousled Locks vs. Smooth Curls

  • v/s
Do you like messy or smooth curls?

Which texture comes out on top?

When you have curly or wavy hair, summertime is the perfect time to embrace your hair's natural bend. But when it comes to the battle of the bend-we're talking tousled locks vs. smooth curls-which texture comes out on top? We'll let you decide!

Tousled Locks

Embrace your inner wild child with these tousled, free-flowing curls. This look is perfect for a night out with friends, a day spent at the beach, or even on a day when the humidity is soaring and your curls simply can't-and shouldn't!-be tamed.

To get the look, you'll want to comb a volumizing mousse through damp hair from roots to ends. Next, using a hair oil or a leave-in conditioner, smooth a small dime-to-quarter-size amount through your hair from mid-shaft through to the ends, this will help ward of frizz, define your curls, and give curly hair that dose of moisture it needs. While you're smoothing the oil through your hair, twist sections of your hair to form your curls. From there, you can opt to use a texturizing salt spray and air dry or dry your hair using a diffuser attachment-scrunching the coils you created from the bottom up like a spring until they are completely dry. Do not move the diffuser back and forth to dry your curls, this will lead to frizz. Once your hair is dry, flip your head over and, using your fingers, separate the coils you created. Flip your hair over and voila! Perfect, tousled locks.

Smooth Curls

Hot date? Fancy event? Big meeting at work? This is the look for you! Combining the best of both worlds-smoothness plus bounce-smooth curls add a bit of polish to your texture by embracing a little heat.

For this look you don't have to have natural texture in your hair, but you'll want to make sure you're not spending too much time outside in high humidity, or the style will fall flat-no matter how much hairspray you use! Using 2-inch barrel curling wand, wrap alternating 1 to 2-inch sections of your hair around the barrel, away from your face. If you have a lot of natural bend at the crown, smooth this down with the iron as your wrap. Allow your entire head to cool before raking through the curls with your fingers and spraying with a strong-hold hair spray. For an added touch, create the style with a side part and pull back one side and pin just over your ear with an embellished barrette.
