Jet Black is Back

And we couldn't be more excited.

In a world full of colorful hair trends, you might be shocked to find that the antithesis of such a look is actually the be-all, end-all of chic hair colors here in 2018. If you've been looking forward to the day when pastel pony-inspired hair colors took a backseat to darker, richer shades, rejoice at the reemergence of jet black hair color. Before dousing your locks in the celebrity-approved shade, as much as you may want to, it's important to first school yourself on the hair color. To help you learn everything there is to know, we tapped L'Oréal Professionnel Artist Abbie Addotta for everything.

Ready to kiss your colorful mane goodbye in favor of something more New York chic? Your new look is just a scroll away.

Jet Black 101

When you hear the term 'jet black hair' you may think that it's just another playful name to make a classic color seem more appealing. You would be incorrect – but hey, that's a good thing in this case! Instead of being your regular black, jet black hair features a rich opaqueness that's velvety with a very light reflective, shiny exterior. In other words, it's pretty much the black version of gemstone hair.

But how does one create this trendy look? "Finding a stylist who can transform your locks into a raven goddess is the most important thing when considering to go jet black," Addotta says. She goes on to explain that if you're going from blonde or light brown to black, your stylist will know how to appropriately fill your hair back in with the colors necessary to support jet black dye and maintain the integrity of your hair in the process.

How to Maintain a Jet Black Mane

"At home you need to follow up with your stylists recommendation," Addotta says. Since your colorist knows your hair and its latest transformation best, it's a good idea to take their word on care. While there are plenty of color care products on the market, abiding by a strict hair regimen can be the difference between beautiful, onyx-like locks and a faded head of hair. That said, stock up on the Serie Expert Vitamino A-OX Shampoo and Conditioner to maintain the brilliance of your black color. And, as with any color-treated mane, make sure to use cool water while you shampoo and condition.

Black is back. Jet black hair is going to be hot for 2018 come rain or shine. And, the darker, the better. So, who's ready to put what they learned to the test?
