How to Tame Fall Flyaways

Keep your hair in check this season!

Between the wind, the hat hair, and the on and off humidity, Fall is notorious for causing flyaways. There's nothing more annoying as spending 30 minutes in front of the mirror each morning only to be met with unruly strands when you finally arrive to your destination. Thankfully, with a few tricks you can tame flyaways and take control of your strands!

Frizz and flyaways are often a sign of hair that's parched and dehydrated. The best way to combat this cause is with a hydrating haircare routine that deeply conditions your locks. In addition to using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, use an overnight mask once a week for added softness and shine.

Be Gentle

Taming flyaways starts from the moment you get out of the shower. Drying your hair the right way is key if you want control. Using a cotton towel to rub and tug at your hair to remove excess water is not only a recipe for flyaways, it's also a good way to cause breakage. Instead blot hair gently when drying after washing-and consider switching to a microfiber towel or even using an old clean t-shirt instead. These options create less friction and thereby less flyaways and frizz.

Frequent heat styling can create breakage and unruly strands. This is why it's important to always (always, always!) use heat protectant product before styling. Not only will these products protect hair from breaking, they can also give you a smoother, silkier, more polished result.

Hairdresser Hack

While it may seem intuitive, hairspray isn't always the best way to tame flyaways once they happen. Turns out that when it comes to taming flyaways, hairdressers have a secret weapon. "Lumi-Contrôle Wax is great if you get little ringlets around your hairline," hairdresser and L'Oréal Professionnel Artist Pepper Pastor shares, "We use it in photoshoots to tame flyaways." For everyday styles, she recommends using a dime-sized amount of Mythic Oil or a mist of Shower Shine.
