Which statement-making hair color will you choose?
One look at our favorite fashion and beauty sites, another look around town and another look through our social feeds confirms what we have thought since scouring the runways at Fashion Week: Bold color is officially the hair trend of the season. That is right, bright hair is back, so it is time to go bold or go home.
But how exactly does one go bold? To get to the bottom of the season's #1 hair question, we looked to the pros. From the most popular color requests to the best way to care for bold hair colors, L'Oréal Professionnel Artist, Laura Gibson tells all. Ready to rock the season's favorite new hair color? Read this first.
The Most Popular Bold Hair Colors
When you think of a bold hair color, you might immediately think bright, too. Believe it or not, a bold hair color can encompass any color that simply stands out from the norm. In terms of FW 2017-2018, Gibson says she's been getting a lot more requests for soft pastel tones, as well as intense hot shades. "Right now, the hot hues are Violet, Peach/Tangerine, Silver, and Pastel Rainbow," Gibson says.
How to Prepare Your Strands for a Bold Color Change
As with any color change, making a turn for the bold requires a certain level of prep to ensure your new color-treated strands will look their best. "Always make sure you are taking the best care of your hair," Gibson says. Even though we're talking about prep, Gibson points out that taking the best care of your hair is a before and after process, not just a one-time thing. That said, she reminds everyone to be sure to use the proper shampoos, conditioners, masks, and heat protectants on your hair before and after going bold with your color.
How to Go Bold
Walking down the aisle of your local drugstore, you might think that any at-home kit could do the trick. When it comes to creating not only a colorful mane, but a healthy one, it's best to consult a professional. "Since a lot of bold colors only show up best on lighter hair colors, I always use L'Oréal Professionnel Smartbond in my Blond Studio Lighteners to ensure I am not compromising the integrity of the hair while I lighten," Gibson says. "My favorite go to for Bold Colors is L'Oréal Professionnel #COLORFULHAIR because it has triple the conditioning agents and fades true to tone."
How to Care for Your New Bold 'Do
Remember how we said it's important to not only care for your hair prior to coloring, but after too? When managing and maintaining your new colorful 'do, Gibson stresses to not over-wash your hair as it can fade the color. That said, be sure to only shampoo when necessary. To prolong the life of your locks between washes, use a dry shampoo like the L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Fresh Dust . Beyond washing less (as well as the aforementioned proper products), it's important to keep the heat down, both in the shower and on your hot tools. "Hot water opens the cuticle so the color fades faster," Gibson says.
