Everything you need to know.
Everyone will experience their first grey hair at some point in their life. Some women prefer to wear them proudly, while others wish to cover them up with hair color. However, diving into the world of permanent hair color is not the only option when looking for ways to cover up those sparkly greys. We quizzed L'Oréal Professionnel Artist Shelley Mohr on our biggest grey-coverage color questions and got an inside tip from Artist Sebastian Langman-Kirtley.
DEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR FOR THE FIRST SIGN OF GREY
There are a number of benefits to opting for demi-permanent color to cover your first greys. Mohr tells us that one of the benefits is a softer line of demarcation (thanks to gradual fading) – resulting in less maintenance. Plus, this type of hair color provides radiant shine and keeps the hair looking healthy! What more could you ask for?
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR?
Mohr identifies some good candidates for demi-permanent hair color: anyone with brown hair who doesn't wish to see any warmth after a few weeks, anyone who wishes to have a natural-looking hair color that is a close match to their own, and anyone who wants to see dimension and variation to their already highlighted hair. If you're still not sure if you'd make a good fit, ask your colorist! Your colorist will be able to select the best type of hair coloring process to meet your needs.
HOW CAN I DETERMINE MY IDEAL SHADE?
To determine your ideal shade of demi-permanent hair color, your colorist will consider a few things. "We first have to look at the client's skin tone and eye color," Mohr says. "Once their skin tone has been determined, the next step is to ask the client whether they'd like a natural look or something more eye-catching." Mohr also takes the client's hair texture into account. "The finer the hair, the more tonal saturation you will achieve," she says. "The coarser the hair, the more you'll need to spike up the tone."
HOW LONG DOES DEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR LAST?
According to Mohr, there are many factors that can determine how long demi-permanent color will last in the hair. "If the client shampoos their hair often, swims, or spends large amounts of time outdoors without a hat on, the color will fade faster," she says. "Most color is designed to live in the hair for 4-6 weeks." That said, if you choose a color that is close to your natural hair color and you have a minimal amount of greys, you may be able to push that number out to 8-10 weeks. To ensure the longevity of results, we recommend using L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert haircare. For when the greys are coming through, try Hair Touch-Up in between salon appointments. This temporary root concealer, available in five shades, can easily (and instantly) mask the appearance of greys and lasts until your next shampoo.
How to Enhance Your Naturally Grey Hair
Say you decide demi-permanent isn't quite for you, Sebastian Langman-Kirtley points out that there are ways to boost your peekaboo greys for a seriously on-trend silver hair color. "To boost a naturally silver hair color I love choosing a glossing service for those clients," Langman-Kirtley says. He points out that it is his go-to for canceling out any warm tones the grey hair may have. So, if you want to add tonal iridescence and intense shine to your strands, consider embracing your greys with this insider tip.
