Copper Foilyage: The Hair Color Technique You Need for Sun-Kissed Highlights

Here's everything you need to know.

Just in time for spring and summer, we're sharing a hair color method you've got to try for natural-looking tresses, below!

No, that's not a spelling mistake. Foilyage is the latest hair color technique you need to know about, especially if you're after brighter, natural-looking highlights. Lucky for you, we're sharing everything you need to know about this new adaptation of balayage-including what it is, how it works, and one of our favorite shades to try it with!

What Is Foilyage?

By now, you're probably familiar with balayage. The technique involves hand-painting color onto individual sections of hair for a soft, natural effect. Similarly to balayage, foilyage involves a freehand painting technique onto sections of the hair. The difference? With foilyage, these individual sections are then wrapped in foil to intensify the color and amplify the effect. The result is light-catching highlights that become more and more vibrant from the new-growth down to the ends.

"One of the reasons that I love this foilyage technique is it's a really fast way to emulate balayage," says L'Oreal Professionnel Ambassador, Jason Backe. "It's also a great way to keep the sections isolated from touching one another. When processing under heat, the foil actually conducts the heat so you get a really even, consistent lift."

The Advantages of Foilyage

Foilyage adds subtle definition to the hair without a heavy commitment. Since the hair's base color stays the same, foilyage doesn't require regular touch-ups. In fact, if you opt to let your hair grow out, you can experiment with a whole new look after just a few months. So not only does the super low-maintenance technique give your hair a chic and natural sun-kissed glow, it does so without the need to go to the salon every few weeks. Win-win!

Who Can Try Foilyage?

Short answer: Everyone! While this technique lends itself to a palette of copper and golden shades, the sun-kissed result can be achieved on blondes and brunettes as well. Whether you're a fan of highlights or are simply eager to try the latest-and-greatest trends, don't hesitate to ask your hairdresser to use the foilyage technique on your locks.

Copper Foilyage

Combine the latest foilyage coloring technique with copper, one of the season's hottest haircolor trends! Ask your hairdresser to utilize copper shades in your foilyage technique to not only up the shine factor, but also warm up your look just in time for the warmer seasons.

Remember to keep your color as bright as possible by using the right hair care products. Reach for shampoos and conditioners formulated for color-treated hair, and incorporate a weekly hair mask for extra moisture and longevity.
