4 Curly Hair Mistakes You're Probably Making

And how to fix them.

You may think you have your curly hair routine down pat, but there's a chance you're guilty of at least a few common blunders. Curious to find out? We're sharing four curly hair mistakes you could be making-and how to fix them.

Mistake #1: Dry Brushing

You may have heard the pros warn against brushing your hair when it's wet as it can cause damage and breakage. That's the golden rule for all hair types EXCEPT curly. Curly hair should only be brushed when it's wet. Why? Because dry brushing can ruin the pattern of your curl and cause frizz. That said, we advise against brushing your curly hair when it's sopping wet. After taking a shower, gently blot your hair with a microfiber towel from roots to ends to remove some of the water, then brush through.

Mistake #2: Blow-Drying Without a Diffuser

Frizz is curly hair's arch nemesis. To keep frizz at a minimum, avoid blasting your hair with direct heat from a blow-dryer without a diffuser. This can cause your hair to dry unevenly, and flow in all sorts of directions and get tangled. A diffuser helps spread the heat out evenly on one section of hair at a time and reduce the risk of frizz and knots. Work with a medium speed and warm temperature versus high speed and hot temperature.

Mistake #3: Washing Your Hair Too Frequently

Are you washing your hair too often? Doing so can strip the moisture out of your hair and cause-yup, you guessed it!-more frizz and damage. Stick to a hair-washing schedule of once or twice per week. Be sure to follow up your conditioner with leave-in masks or oil treatments to play up the hydration even further.

Mistake #4: Skipping Regular Trims

To keep your hair looking its best, getting regular trims is a must. Some naturally curly-haired gals skip trims in fear of losing too much length, but doing so can actually cause more harm than good. To keep split ends and breakage at bay, be sure to visit your hairdresser every six to eight weeks to snip those dead ends. Trust us when we tell you that getting regular trims can allow your hair to grow longer down the line and look healthier too!
